One of the first if not the first boat builders in Muskoka was Uncle Billy Johnston. Certainly he was the first in Port Carling and established a network of boat liveries that rivaled only that of Ditchburn. By the late 1800's William Johnston Sr. was building rowboats and skiffs in Port Carling, Ontario and had established additional liveries in Windermere and Port Carling. Building skiffs was one of the most popular models made by Johnston although today they are impossible to find. This skiff is a superb example of Johnston's work and Canadian craftsmanship. It is nicely varnished and in solid condition overall. It is ready to go back into the water, into a Museum or for use as a display piece. In 1916 Johnston collaborated with Edwin Rogers on a mechanical device which would lift the propeller up into the housing of the hull of the boat which became the Disappearing Propeller Company.
