"Obsession" is a 1948 Gar Wood, bearing hull number 7115. She has been in the same collection for 36 years and is being offered for sale for the first time. The boat began life as a 18.5 foot utility hull and was originally converted into a decked-over Speedster model in the 1960's. When it came time for a complete rebuild, the current owner carefully redesigned and stretched the boat to 21 feet to handle more power, closely following the original Gar Wood Speedster lines. The heart of the boat is a 510 cubic inch, 630HP Chevrolet big block race engine. The engine runs two slip-in mufflers in each side pipe to tone the exhaust noise down when not on the race course, and the sweet spot is right around 3,000 rpm, cruising smoothly at 45 mph. The real fun begins when the slip-in mufflers are removed, the motor climbs above 5,000 rpm, the cavitation plate is jacked up and the boat begins to fly, running at speeds well over 70 mph. This boat is a rocket ship, and the sound of that bored and stroked big block 630HP Chevy motor is magical through the polished 4 inch chrome side pipes! She has been recently refinished, fresh clean bilge with new paint, rereshed interior panels, and motor rebuilt!
