"Isabella" is an undisputed Queen of the Water, a stylish, well-kept and top-notch nearly 90-year-old. She is also one of three John Hacker-designed commuters. In the 1930s, she ran from Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to downtown Detroit, carrying her then-owner to work. At the start of World War II, she was commandeered by the US Navy to assist in the border patrol efforts and patrolled from Mackinac Island to Detroit. When I found her in 1983, she still had a gun mount on the front deck and a big siren on the roof. (I gave the siren to a friend. He turns it on when the Detroit Red Wings score a goal.) I purchased her at auction in 1983 and was bidding against a junk dealer at a time when old wooden cruisers were often burned. "Isabella" was lucky to have landed in the yard with my boat repair business. I'm her third owner, and luckily we were all carpenters. The bottom is your speedboat style, solid and 80-90% original. The riveted oak construction has kept it in excellent shape. The rest of the boat is African mahogany. She can run with the top on as a tri-cabin motor yacht, or with the top of off as a runabout .Robinson boats were deemed the Stradivarius of boats. I've kept her in a boathouse, under cover for her entire life. Paint and varnish are all fresh. She wins every show, not because of me, but because her lines, craftsmanship and provenance speak to it all.
