This boat was built in Bangor Maine in 1901 by Karl Anderson (originally from Norway) for salmon pond fishing on the Penobscot River, home to the nation's first salmon club, once nationally known for its tradition of sending the first salmon caught each year to the U.S. President. In 1912, Karl caught the first salmon sent to President William H. Taft in this boat. He built about a hundred of them but as far as anyone knows, this is the only surviving one. Canvas covered and painted, it was designed and built for fishing and has oars but can also be paddled like a canoe. It last saw service around 1940 on Moosehead lake by Karl's grandson. This boat, with it's great history, is a one-of-a-kind piece of Maine and American history.
