“Powder Monkey” so named as she was built for the DuPont family who has supplied the US with gunpowder since the Revolutionary War “Powder Monkey “ was commissioned by the DuPont family whose renowned chemical company has supplied gunpowder to the United States armed forces since the eighteen hundreds. She is so named for the brave young sailor who would dare to carry a keg of gunpowder from the protected depth of the ship to the gun deck in spite of incoming cannon fire. Such gallantry would frequently be rewarded with early promotion. To this day an officer on modern US ships in charge of ordinance is frequently respectfully known as the “powder monkey”. This Herreshoff Haven is well built, cold molded and easy to maintain and sail. The seating is comfortable and all aboard are kept dry in spite of strong winds thanks to Herreshoffs classic signature, varnished mahogany combing.
