Learn how the process works (FAQ)
The distinctive disappearing propeller boat affectionately referred to as a “Dippy” or “Dispro” was produced by four different companies between 1914 and 1958. The first of these companies was the Disappearing Propeller Boat Company, founded by W. J. Johnston. Johnston developed the folding propeller and driveshaft mechanism which was patented in 1914. Since the propeller, shaft, and skeg can be pulled up inside the hull, Dippys are ideal for shallow water use. Dippys were even adopted by the Canadian Government and used by many divisions from the Department of Game and Fisheries to the Air Force. This Waterford Scout Dispro was a popular model in the early 1920s. This was part of the Museum collection since the 70s and is likely in original condition with much of the hardware in tact. She has been deaccessioned and all proceeds will go to the direct care of ABM's collection.
