Not to be confused with the much more common “Racing Runabouts” built from 1948 through 1954, Model 517 Special Race Boats were true race boats built light and run hard. As a result, few authentic examples have survived. Pandora is a meticulously executed reproduction, built in Australia, and finished by New England Boat and Motor. Identical in appearance and performance to her pre-war ancestor, she incorporates the finest in modern technology and craftsmanship. Her hull is constructed of cold-molded marine plywood and Philippine mahogany totally encapsulated in epoxy resin. Her bottom is sheathed with two layers of fiberglass cloth and she is beautifully finished in blue and white Awlgrip. Powered by a 300 hp 350 c.i. Corvette V8 from the GM Hi-Performance Division, she easily (and reliably) equals the race performance of her predecessors.
