A Unique Collector’s Canoe: Here is a chance to own and to preserve a piece of canoe history. This canoe has been crafted by the Burleigh Falls Canoe Company using a unique method of canoe construction that utilizes cedar strips that have been attached to oak ribs using copper nails. This method of canoe construction has a long lineage. It was first developed in the Lakefield/Peterborough Ontario area in the late 1850’s and early 1860’s. This canoe building tradition was continued by Walter Walker who was born in 1907. Walter ended up settling in Lakefield Ontario, and built canoes for more than 60 years, using some on the original forms from the Gordon Canoe Company of Lakefield. At the age of 100, Walter was still building and the master canoe builder figured he still had enough wood lying around to build one more canoe before he could retire. (See Canadian Icons - https://www.canadianicons.ca/products/walter-walker-canoe) Back in the early 1970’s, Walter trained an apprentice in the art of strip canoe building who, in 1974, went on to found the Burleigh Falls Canoe Company. The canoe for sale here was built by the Metis of Burleigh Falls, and it was purchased in the Spring of 1976. Since the date of purchase, there have been only two owners. The canoe has been stored indoors and beautifully maintained. Features: 16’ Cedar Strip canoe, Babiche seats, Butternut Decks, Red Oak Gunwales, Ribs & Centre Thwart.
